  • In pre-colombian mesoamerica the Maya-Itza lived all over today's peninsula Yucatan of Mexico. Their Kingdom, Chichen Itza, as well as other low land ruins today are tourist magnets and the most visited sites in Latin America. A few hundred Itza still live at the lake-shore of lake Itza in northern Guatemala, where their last king Kanek' , was defeated on 13. March 1697 by Spanish conquerors. Every year the last Maya Itza commemorate the day of the last battle in the region. With only a dozen ancient speakers left by 2010, their language is one of the next to extinct in Central America.

  • Jean Baptiste(10 years) in front of the tent where he lives with his parents, 4 sisters and 3 brothers. He is selling portions of charcoal for the other families in the camp to make a profit out of the bigger sack. Since Hurrican Ike and the following flood in September 2008 totaly destroyed the house of the family they are living in the shelter in the camp. Their houses desapiered compleatly and they aren't allowed to go back into the area. Most of the people never had an official property of the land. At the end of December there is no solution for the families in the camp where to go. The fact that International ngo's first aid programms are running out makes the situation even more dificult.
